My Friend, Audrey

On the first day of 4th grade, I was seated next to a complete stranger. She had blond hair, blue-green eyes, and glasses. Her choice of clothing, skinny-jeans with a blue, tight shirt with a leather jacket, and a beanie. Audrey was written on the name tag below.

I didn’t know how to introduce myself so all I said was, “Are you a nerd?” The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them. “No,” was the answer. An awkward silence followed.

That same day before recess, we ended-up next to each other in line. A conversation started in which both she and I discovered we were complete opposites, yet exactly the same. Completely different taste in music and TV shows. Yet we laughed at the same jokes and enjoyed doing the same things for fun.

Now – more than two years later – we are best friends and know almost everything about each other. YEY!

  1. Hello, “noofyourbusinessbob”. Such a clever and funny name! Sometimes, complete opposites make the best of friends… and the best of stories. I could see you turning this into a longer story! I imagine the girls eventually adjusting to middle school. I hope you write more because I would love to read it.

  2. Sometimes drawing from our personal experiences make the best writing ideas! I know a lot of 4-6th grade kids that will really connect to the relationships you wrote about. Keep writing! You are doing grea!
