By Michelle Lynn Senters-
Our title, “Writers Rest” is a an example of a perfect “subject-verb agreement”. Our plural subject (WRITERS) agrees with the plural verb (REST).
RULE OF GRAMMAR:
A singular subject requires a singular verb. Example: The boy reads.
A plural subject requires a plural verb. Example: The boys read.
Yes, “Writers Rest” is an example of a perfect “subject-verb agreement”, BUT this rule of grammar is not the only reason our title is perfect. Our title is also telling the truth.
WRITERS- meaning you and I
REST- meaning to cease working, put down the pen and put away the paper, stop writing a particular story and open the mind to new ideas
Resting = Creativity
One day a week, I make an effort to stop writing. I purposefully put down the pen and turn off the computer. I stop thinking about the story I am writing and open my mind to new ideas. Why? REST is a writing technique. Writers use REST to rejuvenate their brain and cultivate creativity.
The Mind of a Resting Writer
When I take a break from my work, my thoughts come ALIVE! When I am not thinking about the dialogue, plot, and character development in my latest book, my thoughts focus on NEW IDEAS. Let me give you an example. Yesterday, my family and I went to an arts festival in downtown Colorado Springs. I decided to rest from my work and think like a resting writer. Below are a few photographs of things that inspired me and the thoughts I had about them.
No writing today! Rest your mind and body. Have fun. Play. Look up. Look down. Look closely at the world. Look for story all around you. Take photos or draw pictures. At the end of the day, write about your new stories ideas so you don’t forget them.
Check-in below in the comment section with your first name, age, and a few of your observations and story ideas. What did you see today that you never noticed before?
